liechtenstein

Not many people talk about one of the world’s smallest countries: Liechtenstein. Hell, when I proposed going here on our European trip in May 2018, Ben had quite a bit of resistance. He didn’t see the point or didn’t know why we would even want to go there.

I proved him wrong.

While we didn’t really get to see everything this small country has to offer but we got a taste of it and loved it. Located close to the Swiss Alps, a lot of the country is made up of beautiful mountains as well.

Located between Switzerland and Austria, and close to the German border, Liechtenstein could be a great day trip from wherever you’re staying. We happened to make the trip from Basel, it was about a 2 and a half hour drive. Zurich would have been a much closer day trip but flying into Basel was way cheaper.

During our trip we decided to travel to Vaduz. It was the closest city for us to visit and is home to the infamous castle that is associated very closely with Liechtenstein itself. The city is relatively small and you can’t actually go inside the castle because it’s still a personal residence so it gave us the opportunity to venture a little farther afield.

Seriously, I don’t think I expected to see some of the sights we did. After leaving Vaduz we drove up and up to Triesenberg. Almost everywhere we looked there were beautiful views. As we travelled from Vaduz to Triesenberg, we went up and up. I’ll admit, at times I was a bit nervous as the roads are very narrow and they have full public buses going up and down!

The best views were from a restaurant near the top of the Triesenberg mountains called Mountain Inn Masescha. I’ve had unreal Apple Strudel in Vienna but I swear this took the prize. Not only was it delicious but the view was to die for.

Of course, you can’t visit Liechtenstein without visiting the famous Vaduz castle. Whether you choose to drive up to get a closer look or walk, you’ll be pleased with the look out spots. We drove up but walked down quite a ways which gave us the chance to really see more of the surrounding area.

I really don’t think you can visit Liechtenstein properly without renting a car. While the country is small, it would make it much harder to see more of the country without being able to navigate yourself. If you’re doing a day trip, you can get a pretty cheap car rental from whatever major city you’re travelling from. Our car rental from Basel only cost us about $80 CAD for the day.

I use the term ‘easy’ loosely though, as I mentioned, the roads are small and super windy. Make sure you have a good and very attentive driver with you. I mean, it’s most of the reason why I bring Ben on trips (kidding). If you’re comfortable driving in mountain landscapes then you will love making your way through Liechtenstein.
