From sangria shades of the early morning sunrise to the neon pulse of basement bars after sunset, Australia is definitely a land of extremes. Many of Australia’s treasures may seem out of reach for most of us on a budget, but with a little planning, creativity and flexibility, I’ve discovered some terrific ways to travel down-under while not spending a small fortune. The following are some great tips to consider when planning your next trip to the land of Oz.

Saving on Travel

Experience has taught me that budgeting on transportation is easier than it seems, especially when I plan ahead. It is possible to travel free of charge on many public buses, shuttles… as well as on trains in some city centers.  Websites like Rail Australia offer some cool deals on rail passes. I find that traveling by train allows me sit back, relax, and take in some fascinating views. I cannot overemphasize how important it is to look for special deals and discounts. However, even people like me, who often travel on a whim, can find great last minute low-cost options. It is also possible to save on airfare by shopping the deals and by purchasing price-saving air passes. I suggest looking for seasonal deals, especially when there is some flexibility in your itinerary.

Low-Cost Lodging in Australia

Hostels, vacation rentals, camping, living with a family on a working farm, all provide excellent, cost-effective ways to cut down on lodging. Often when I travel solo, I find hostels, although not the most luxurious option, are a practical and very affordable way to see Australia on a budget. Aussie’s campgrounds are some of the most beautiful on the planet. Tent camping and RV rentals are affordable options, especially for those of us who love adventure. Another economical way to see Australia is by booking a cruise. Several Australian cruise lines provide all-inclusive deals. Additionally, vacation rentals and home exchanges have made it possible for my family to kick back and relax, and having our own rental kitchen has helped us cut down on the cost of food.

Food and Beverages on a Budget

The best bit of advice here is to shop where residents shop. Shop the grocery stores and the farmers’ markets. Besides finding incredibly vibrant, organic fruits and veggies, as well as bread fresh from the oven, this is one of the easiest ways to cut down on the cost of food. (Note…I love packing a picnic basket filled with baguettes, local farm cheese, and a chilled bottle of one of Australia’s award winning wines. Not only is this cost-effective, it makes for a truly romantic and relaxing date. Another idea, plan a BBQ!) If you choose to eat out, find out where the locals dine. Takeaway foods such as sushi and food halls in the malls offer an assortment of inexpensive dining options.

Tips for Saving on Entertainment

Moreover, and this is where the most exciting pleasures are found, visitors to Australia can take advantage of several freebies. Many attractions and museums do not require an admission fee. Discount cards and ticket agencies like QueenofTickets provide an assortment of special offers and package deals, especially to people like me who love concerts, sporting events, and sightseeing. Lastly, there are many spontaneous, free, live events to keep you entertained down the main streets and beaches of Australia’s larger cities like Melbourne and Sydney. In Melbourne, for example, there is a bunch of free gigs all over the city pretty much any day of the week.
