Next year I’m getting married and the best part is I get to plan a honeymoon (besides getting to be a wife of course, well, and the big party with all of our family and friends)! There are so many different options and choices it’s hard to choose from. Seeing as it will be my honeymoon, we want to go somewhere epic. Somewhere we wouldn’t normally go, or have ever gone before.
This rules out Europe because we visit every couple of months to see Ben’s family and friends. Whenever we visit we are sure to do a new country at the same time. With so many options to choose from, we definitely need help deciding.
I’ve been making lists upon lists over the past couple of months to figure out where it is we actually want to go. The lists I’ve made for this post are our top options. I’m sure you’ll be able to see what makes them so difficult to choose from.
The other element in all of this is that I will at most have 3 weeks to take off. So sadly travelling around the world isn’t necessarily a viable option.
Honeymoon 1: South America Dream Trip
Countries: Peru, Ecuador, Columbia
I have been dreaming about going to Machu Picchu for as long as I can remember. There are so many people I know that have travelled to Peru in the past couple of years and I can never get used to how outstandingly beautiful it looks. Plus there’s the ever-growing rumour about how one day they are going to close it down to the public.
If I’m travelling to South American I’m obviously not going to just visit one country. I’ll make a trip out of it. The idea would be to travel into Peru and do Machu Picchu first.
Afterwards we would travel to Ecuador. I would definitely want to see the swing at the end of the world and Quito looks incredible! I’m not sure how easy this country would be to do in a couple days (5 at most) but if we planned far enough ahead it could work.
Our last stop would be Columbia. Obviously we wouldn’t be able to see even half of the country in the short amount of time we would be travelling but Cartegena has been on my radar for quite some time. I used to work with a girl who had spent some time there and she absolutely raved about it. Give it a quick Google and I think you’ll see how beautiful the city is.
Honeymoon 2: Paradise
Countries: Maldives, Sri Lanka
If you have ever seen pictures of the Maldives or Sri Lanka you will know exactly why I would want to visit. The beaches at both of these countries look like the most unreal places I’ve ever seen. If there was ever a dream honeymoon trip this would be it.
The problem is, neither of these destinations would be cheap to get too. It would cost us almost $4000 just to fly there, let alone the accommodations once we got there! I’m sure money wouldn’t matter if I was sitting on the deck of my above water bungalow with lots of ocean before me, watching the fish swim by.
Sri Lanka also looks incredible. I had a friend who travelled to Sri Lanka recently and couldn’t say enough amazing things about it. Because the country is so unfamiliar to me, I would love to do a tour. A company like Olanka Travels would take me around parts of the country showing me more than I could probably plan for myself in one day. I’ve actually always wanted to try a group tour (I can’t believe I haven’t done one yet!).
Honeymoon 3: South East Asia
Countries: Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand
I have only been to Asia once but it was an experience I’ll never forget. Everything was so incredibly different. The people were so nice and welcoming, the landscape was so incredibly different than anything I had experienced before.
Ben has never been to Asia before but has been dying to visit Vietnam so this would be the best opportunity. It would be a bit of an ambitious itinerary to try and get to visit all three countries in less than three weeks but if we flew between the countries it would be manageable.
These flights would also be really expensive but at least once we got there it would be pretty reasonable, if not extremely cheap to travel around. I know it’s cliche but Thailand has been on my list of places to visit for a very long time.
Honeymoon 4: Eastern European Adventure
Countries: Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Romania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro
If we were looking at a trip where we saw as many countries as possible this would be the trip to take! Obviously I have a 30 by 30 goal and to help achieve that goal this would be the trip you want to take. All of these countries have been on my list for quite some time, especially Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The great thing about this trip is that the flights wouldn’t be as much as if we were to travel to Asia. It would also be very reasonable in terms of food and accommodation once we got there. The one downside of this trip is that we would constantly be on the move. With less than three weeks, we would have to be in a new country about every two days.
Honeymoon 5: Central America Adventure
Countries: Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama
Costa Rica is another country that is very high on my list. I have heard the most amazing things about Costa Rica, the beaches, the yoga, the zip-lining! I think this honeymoon itinerary would be the most affordable and easiest to do in the time we would have. Flights from Toronto are pretty easy, frequent and cost effective.
While I haven’t heard that much about Panama I still think it would be a very interesting country to visit. With the beaches, rainforests and canals it’s pretty easy to see why anyone would want to visit Panama. The same goes for Nicaragua. Most people I talk to who have travelled to Central America actually saw Nicaragua is the new Costa Rica. It’s just a little less untapped by tourism, which I’m a big fan of!
Where would you pick to go on your honeymoon?
Wow, all these places look amazing! Though Maldives, Sri Lanka just catches my eyes at once, all of these places are amazing! By the way, congratulations! Can’t wait to see some wedding photos next year:)
Thanks so much Grace! And I know tell me about it, would be such an amazing trip!
I vote 3 or 5! Depending on where you live, you can get decent airfare to Thailand! Also, after the craziness of wedding planning, I really enjoyed having some time to unwind on a beach with no real agenda. After a few days I got antsy and wanted to explore, but these options allow for both depending on your mood and energy levels!!! Ahhh no matter what though, you can’t go wrong. Honeymoon is the best trip ever!
Funny enough those are my top two itineraries as well! Thanks for your advice – I’ve been told by so many people I’ll need some good relaxation time after the wedding lol so hopefully any of these places will have that plus adventure. I’m like you, I can’t sit still for too long.

hello,
all those option look great. Did you decide on where you are going? I am also in the mid of deciding a honeymoon location and can’t decide between Thailand or Indonesia and i only get 2 and half weeks off so not sure if both countries would work.
We decided on a quick getaway to St. Lucia because of work commitments and other trips we have planned this year!
