What to do in Byron Bay
Watersports and sea activities
This may seem like an obvious one, but there are so many options that people don’t always know where to start. It would be a shame not to immerse yourself in Byron Bay’s glorious waters, just as so many other visitors do.
Whether you can surf or not, it’s a great place to try it. There are also plenty of diving, snorkelling and kayaking activities on offer, during which you can see various forms of wildlife including sharks, turtles, whales and dolphins. If that sounds good, you should get down to the Julian Rocks in Cape Byron Marine Park for an unforgettable water experience.
Give something back to the environment with Australian Seabird Rescue
Head over to Ballina if you want to lend a helping hand to seabirds that have seen better days. Here you will find The Australian Seabird Rescue, Research, Rehabilitation and Coastal Education Centre, which is open to everyone. Kids love this place too!
It’s an educational experience in which you’ll learn about environmental issues through talks, but you’ll also be able to interact with the wildlife under the care of the centre. Expect to see all kinds of birds, from pelicans, to shore birds and endangered turtles. Get in touch with the centre to find out more.
Do the lighthouse walk
Get your hiking boots on and take a stroll along the lighthouse walk, which is the beacon on Cape Byron. This lookout is the one guarding Byron Bay town, and keeping an eye on the ships out there on the water. From here you’ll be privy to some of the best views on your trip, so don’t forget your camera.
The most popular walk for visitors is the one that stretches from below the Cape and across to the lighthouse. There and back equates to around a 3.7km, so it shouldn’t be too taxing; however, you can expect to have to climb a few hills along the way.
Hike up Mount Warning
Those who really love the great outdoors should consider a hike up Mount Warning, the now the extinct volcano. This is a more challenging hike at around 9 km, and should take you around 4 hours. You’ll need to find your own way, but it’s well sign-posted and there are maps.
Wander through (and wonder at) subtropical rainforest that is so beautiful it has been granted World Heritage status. On the way up you will be able to look out across both the ocean and hinterland with awesome 360 degree panoramic views.
