With just under a year left until I get married (yikes!) there is still so much left to plan. I am also one of the worst procrastinators in the world when it comes to huge projects like this. Once I get started it’s fine, it’s the getting started that I struggle with. One thing I’m not struggling with though is booking my Honeymoon. In fact, I have probably been spending more time looking for Honeymoon ideas than I have looking for a dress, or my flower choices.

Honeymoon’s seem to have this uniqueness about them. Some people almost take it as the trip that defines the beginning of their marriage. It’s weird. Whenever you talk about getting married, ‘where are you going on your Honeymoon’ is a pretty typical question. Or maybe that’s just because the people I talk to love to travel. Either way planning your honeymoon and finding a destination that fits your wants, needs and desires is really important.

Regardless of the mounting to-do list I thought it would be helpful for other brides-to-be who aren’t as experienced planning travel. Here are my top tips to help you get started:

Pick the type of honeymoon you want

This might seem like a strange thing to start with but I think it’s the most important. There are many brides out there that look for a destination where they can lounge around recovering from the whirlwind of the days before. There are other brides who can’t sit still and want the ultimate adventure for their honeymoon. Than, there are the ones in between who want a bit of both. I think I fall into the latter. I am looking for a place where I can relax but have the option for adventure once I’ve had a few days to chill out.

Pick the destination

Obviously there are still going to be tons and tons of options for you to choose from once you’ve decided on a destination. It’s important to consider travel time before nailing down a destination. Hopefully with your Honeymoon, you’re taking a bit more time than most other destinations so the world is truly your oyster. If not? Time to destination is really important. We are still trying to work that out on our end but 1-2 weeks is what we are looking at which means destinations in Asia, South America, Central America and Europe are on the table.

Pick your accommodations

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, where you stay can either make or break your holiday. Make sure you find a place to stay that is central, beautiful and comfortable. For example, my top choice if we choose Thailand as our Honeymoon destination would be Hotel Indigo in Bangkok. Always read reviews on TripAdvisor before you book so that you can get the best and most accurate description of where you’ll be staying.

Book the activities

Even if you want to sit around doing absolutely nothing, you really should do at least one tour. Trying something new and out of the ordinary is why you travel in the first place! Booking things like food tours, cooking classes or wine tastings are great options for those who don’t want to go to too crazy. Do a Google search for the most popular activities for the destination  you’re travelling to so you can get a good sense of what the options are.

At the end of the day you’re going to enjoy where you’re going no matter what. It’s the beginning of your marriage and for the first time ever you’ll be travelling as husband and wife! You really can’t go wrong.
