Travel packing list items in suitcase

When it comes to packing there are 5 items you should always travel with. Don’t worry I’m not going to sit here listing out obvious essentials like a quality suitcase because that would be boring.

Instead, I’m going to list out the items that I never leave at home but often aren’t at the top of people’s packing lists. We all know I’m not a full-time traveler but I’ve taken a fair few flights in the past several years. Last year I even visited 10 countries in one year while working full-time. Moving around so much means having the proper ‘equipment’ with me is incredibly important.

Travel Insurance

Okay yes, I work for an insurance company so you may think I’m being slightly biased but believe me this should be near the top of your list. In one of my past jobs, I worked as a travel agent and the horror stories I’ve heard will have you never leaving home without coverage. Travel insurance is definitely one of the items you should always travel with.

Before you go out and buy a brand new policy though, look into some of the bank cards or even work benefits you have. You may be surprised with what you’re covered for. The 2 credit cards I have are both travel credit cards with some medical coverage while I’m abroad. Anything I’m missing with those cards, my work also has coverage which means I can have peace of mind when travelling, knowing that I’ll be covered in the event something happens.

A nice watch

There’s a lot to be said about a nice watch. Not only is it practical but it can also make a fantastic statement piece. I recently got the Jord Frankie watch and I truly can’t wait to wear it on my next vacation.

I have a small collection of watches and this one honestly stands out in terms of quality and style. I got my watch in the Ebony & Gold colour so that I know it’s going to work with whatever outfit I’m wearing while on vacation.

Jord watches

The coolest part about this watch? It’s made out of wood! The piece has a minimalist feel to it, which I’m all about these days as well. In fact, Ben is often trying to steal it from me because the Frankie watches are unisex.

Hand sanitizer

This is probably the most maternal thing I’ve ever written. But seriously, always wash your hands when travelling. When you really think hard about it, planes, trains and taxis are so gross. The amount of people that pass through them doing who knows what gives me the chills.

Right around the end of last year I developed a horrible flu. It then turned into a sinus infection, then an ear infection and eventually I burst my eardrum. I attributed all of this to taking 6 flights within a 2-week timeframe. So yes, hand sanitizer is definitely one of the items you should travel with.

Reusable water bottle

I am always dehydrated when I travel. Being in the air makes you super dehydrated which is why one of the items you should travel with is a reusable water bottle. Make sure to keep filling it up, especially on long flights. You may not feel like your thirsty but I promise your body will thank you for it later. Plus, being hydrated is one of the best ways to fight off jetlag.

I will always fill my S’well bottle in the hotel before going out and exploring for the day. I will also fill it up whenever I stop for a meal. I think that people often forget how much walking they do when touring around a city. Being outside and moving around that much means you need lots of water to keep you hydrated.

A scarf

Anyone who knows me personally that reads this blog is going to laugh at this one. I swear I never leave the house without a scarf, let alone a trip. One of my favourite items is my Aritzia blanket scarf. It’s great for wearing on top of clothes but because it’s so big I usually use it as a blanket on planes or trains when I travel. I get cold really easily.

A scarf won’t just keep you warm though. Scarves are one of the best items you should travel with because they can often act as cover-ups when entering religious attractions. During my visit to Bali I found myself without a scarf and ended up having to buy one because we weren’t allowed in the temples without covering our knees.

A sleeping mask

Lastly on my list of items you should travel with is a sleeping mask. I’m a really terrible sleeper and I get woken up really easily. One thing that I have found that helps me to sleep no matter where I am is a good sleeping mask. This is especially true on flights.

If you’re going to get a sleeping mask you should also consider ear plugs. I don’t know how many times I’ve been in a hotel or hostel and haven’t been able to sleep because of the noise. Trust me, it will make your sleep so much better if you can control the light and sound yourself.

So there you have it, 6 items you should always travel with that in my opinion are very underrated!
