This past February I took a trip to Chicago. Even though it was the middle of winter, we did a pretty good job of seeing all of the city’s main attractions. Let me tell you one thing though, it is definitely not advisable to visit this city in the winter. The wind really is something you haven’t experienced in any other city.
Regardless of weather though, Chicago is an absolutely beautiful city with lots of fun things to do. The list below are my favourite spots that come very highly recommended!
Howling at the Moon
While not necessarily a typical ‘attraction’ in Chicago, Howling at the Moon is a duelling piano bar. I had the best night singing along with the duellers, grabbing some delicious comfort food and of course having a few beers! Definitely spend the extra money to get a table and make sure you book it in advance! This place is very popular for bachelorette and birthday parties so if you hate celebrating, maybe stay clear.
The Signature Room at the 95th
If you love enjoying delicious, unique cocktails with a fantastic view then you MUST check out this spot. Located in the John Hancock Tower, The Signature Room is one of Chicago’s best kept secrets. The entrance is free (with the purchase of a drink of course). If you’re willing to wait a little longer I would definitely say get a seat by the windows!
Field Museum of Natural History
Normally I’m not one for museums. I can appreciate art and really love learning about other cultures but there’s something about museums that makes me feel like they’re all the same. I knew I had to check out the infamous Field Museum during my visit and I’m glad I did! Even just for seeing Sue the Trex in person.
Cloud Gate
No trip to Chicago would be complete without a picture of you in front of Cloud Gate, or more popularly known as the Bean. This giant mirror is really a spectacular sculpture and worth a visit. Just be wary of all the other tourists crowding around trying to get pictures of themselves. I would recommend visiting early in the morning!
Navy Pier
While not spectacular in the winter, the views are hard to beat at the very least. Navy Pier is located just on the outside of the city and was an easy walk from where we stayed. I can only imagine how great the pier is in the summer!
Where to stay
Luxury: The Millennium Knickerbocker Hotel would be my preferred hotel to stay in when visiting the windy city. A close second of course would be the Westin Michigan Avenue Chicago Hotel with its unbeatable location.
Moderate: It’s hard to beat the reliability of a hotel chain like Best Western which is why the Best Western Plus Hawthorne Terrace Hotel would be a top choice for a moderate hotel. For something a little different and more unique there is also the Hotel Monaco Chicago, A Kimpton Hotel.
Budget: You can’t list off a few hotels without giving a budget-friendly option so for those looking to save a few pennies, I would check out The Chicago Getaway Hostel.
