Planning your first trip to Europe? I’m excited for you! Without a doubt this continent is my favourite in the world. There are so many different countries with such differences I don’t think I could ever get bored of visiting.
I know it can feel a bit overwhelming planning your first trip overseas though. I remember the first time I flew to Europe (my epic Ireland road trip), I had no idea what to expect. It seemed so strange.
The one thing I’ll say though is there is no bad place to pick for your first trip to Europe. Because tourism is such a big industry in many of the countries on the continent you’ll find it fairly easy to travel around. Even if you don’t speak the language.
So where should you visit for your first trip to Europe? Read on to see our top suggestions!
England | London, Cotswolds
London is definitely one of the best places to start your first trip to Europe. Not only do they speak English, but it’s also pretty easy to get around. Plus, it’s one of the most iconic cities in the world.
If you really want to explore London I would give yourself at least 3 days. This will give you plenty of time to see the main sights while also having time to enjoy the epic pub culture. Try the walking route we’ve put together if you’re short on time.
We’ve also listed out the Cotswolds here for a perfect trip outside of the city. The Cotswolds are the quintessential English countryside region. Here you’ll find little cottages with thatched roofs and quaint high streets.

France | Paris, Strasbourg, Colmar
Another iconic city for your first trip to Europe is Paris. I’m sure you’ve heard of the beautiful French streets filled with high fashion and mouth watering bakeries.
With so much to see, you’re better off spending about 3 days here. Take your time wandering through the streets and enjoying the outdoor patios. Another Parisian favourite? Grab a bottle of wine and baguette and sit facing the Eiffel Tower. At night you’ll be blessed with a beautiful light show.
After getting your European feet wet in Paris, take a train to Strasbourg and/or Colmar. These are by far some of the cutest towns in Europe I’ve ever seen. Colmar is easy enough to see in one day if you really wanted to. I would spend 2 days in Strasbourg to really take your time exploring the nooks and crannies.

Italy | Rome, Amalfi Coast
I have a love hate relationship with Rome. It’s a city with so much history but if you go during high season it can be really intense. And hot. My suggestion is to pick a shoulder month to visit (like May or October). That way you can experience Rome with nicer weather and fewer tourists.
Rome is one of the best places for your first visit to Europe because it offers history, nightlife and unbelievable food. I swear Ben had pizza at every meal and never grew tired of it.
Once you’ve spent time among the Roman ruins, make your way down to the Amalfi coast. It truly is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen. The sprawling cliff-side homes on one side and stunning beaches on the other. You could easily spend a week and not get bored.
When visiting the Amalfi coast, you can easily travel from one small town to another. This way you can see more of the beautiful country without the stress.

Ireland | Dublin, Cliffs of Moher
Ireland is another fantastic option for those who are looking to visit Europe for the first time. I mean really, who wouldn’t love quality beer and great views?
The added bonus about visiting Ireland on your first trip to Europe is that they speak English! I’m sure at times you’ll have to listen a little closer to understand the accent (especially after a few beers).
If you’re not turned off by driving on the other side of the road, I encourage you to rent a car and explore the country a bit more. One of the most popular spots to explore is of course the beautiful Cliffs of Moher. The area around the Cliffs is stunning as well. Stop in as many little towns along the way as you can!

Netherlands | Amsterdam
Last but not least on our list of places to visit for your first trip to Europe is the Netherlands. Out of all of the iconic cities on this list Amsterdam is notoriously known for its partying ways. A place where almost anything goes, many of the areas in Amsterdam are not for the faint of heart.
I will also mention however that there are so many other sides to Amsterdam besides partying. It also has a unique and interesting history. One of the most moving things I’ve done in my travels is visit the Anne Frank house. Learning about what life was like for her in World War 2 was fascinating.
Amsterdam is also a beautiful spot to simply wander around. Because they entertain millions of tourists every year, you will have no problems getting around the city. I found mostly everyone we came across spoke some English.
