I don’t think I could ever see enough photos of Hallstatt. The mountainous region in Austria is definitely not one to miss. It has everything to make up the perfect road trip: it’s a short drive from 2 major cities, the views on your way are just as beautiful as the town and it’s easy enough to see in one day.
I can’t tell you whether it’s better to visit the city in the winter or the summer because I’m sure both boast as much beauty. For the purpose of this trip though we visited in the winter and I couldn’t have loved it more.
During our stay in Salzburg, we rented a car and headed out to the Hallstatt region. It was an easy drive along smaller highways. I would highly recommend taking more of a back road itinerary than the major highways. After all, the road trip is often the best part of travelling isn’t it?
If you do plan on driving into Hallstatt, there isn’t much parking in the area. There is, however, a public parking area just on the outskirts of the city. Don’t worry though, it’s not far to walk back into the little town. It’s a very nice and short walk as well, unless of course like us you get stuck in a torrential rainfall on the way back!
For the best photos of Hallstatt, are definitely taken from the outskirts as you round the lake. We found a little spot which happened to be a police station that offered incredible views of the mountains on either side. Then walk along the water and take as many photos of Hallstatt as you can on your way in!
I really wish we had have spent more time in Hallstatt but because the weather ended up turning so poorly we thought it was best to go home. I would recommend stopping in the little town of Mondsee if you are heading back to Salzburg. Mondsee is home to the church where the Sound of Music wedding was filmed. It’s also home to the best Apple Strudel you will ever have. That is no exaggeration. There is a cafe right across the street from the church, incredibly unassuming and so worth it.
