The best part about travelling to Munich in the winter are all of the beautiful photos of the snow falling on the ground. Last Christmas we spent 24 hours travelling through the popular city.
Obviously, in the winter, you’d likely rather head to the sunshine and somewhere warm but I honestly love touring European cities in the colder months. There are fewer visitors, it’s never really that cold (compared to Canada) and there are often plenty of museums to keep you busy.
I was actually very impressed with the architecture of Munich. Everywhere I turned there were intricate buildings with incredible history. Known largely for its ties to the Nazi party and Hitler, I would definitely recommend taking a walking tour to learn more.
You also cannot miss having a beer at the Haufbrahaus. The famous beer hall is such a fun way to spend a couple of hours and get a glimpse into what German culture is really like. We particularly loved eating the warm pretzels they bring by. You will need to get there early or at least try to reserve a table because it really books up fast.
If you’re only staying for a few days I would recommend springing a few extra dollars to stay right in the centre of the city. While it’s a really walkable city, we found staying right in the thick of it was way better, as it normally is! The spot we chose was Louis Hotel. It was right near the Marienplatz so you could get to everything you wanted to get to really quickly.

If you’re planning a trip to Munich during the winter season, make sure to plan it in December, the Christmas markets are some of the best in Europe and definitely worth visiting for. It felt so festive walking around with all of the decorations up and ready for Christmas we absolutely loved it. Plus, what’s better than walking around in the Christmas markets and enjoying mulled wine! I’m obsessed with mulled wine now in the cold weather after walking around the cold streets of Munich getting warm.
