Never seen any photos of Gibraltar, or heard of it for that matter? You’re not alone. This small country isn’t incredibly popular. There aren’t hoards of tourists flocking to the country nor was it overly busy when we visited. Albeit it was only for a day (but it was a fantastic one).
Before planning our trip to Portugal and Spain I had never even heard of this tiny country. Located on the southern coast of the Iberian Peninsula, this small country is actually quite unique. What many don’t know is that Gibraltar is actually owned and governed by the United Kingdom.
The minute you cross the border you are greeted with an iconic British symbol, a red telephone booth. It’s really quite surreal, wondering from the beautiful Spanish landscapes and hearing the Spanish language to a smaller England. Only the landscape is completely different from England.
Gibraltar is essentially one giant rock. Homes and hotels are dotted around the rock making it actually quite time-consuming to get around. While we were there the roads were actually shut on one whole side because there were small rocks falling from above onto the roads. Crazy right?
During our trip, we stayed at the Caleta hotel. It was a great location and I can imagine how much better it would have been in the summer situated along the water. While there aren’t a ton of options there are some pretty decent hotels in Gibraltar for any budget.

The best part about this country is that it doesn’t really matter where you stay, you’re always going to be along the water and close to everything. If you’re only staying for a night and have an early flight I would recommend staying closer to the airport. There are only so many cabs on the island and we had quite a bit of trouble getting one when the roads were closed. We actually had to split the cab with another couple.
For the best photos of Gibraltar, you can head up the rock to take some amazing aerial shots. Unfortunately, because we were only there for a day we got pretty unlucky with the weather and we couldn’t get to the top of the rock. We did, however, manage to see some infamous Gibralter monkeys! They came right up to the balcony of our hotel. We were told to leave our patio door closed because they monkeys have a tendency to come in and steal sugar packs.
Have we convinced you to take a trip yet?
